CHOOSING A FORMAT

Which one should you pick?

MP3Plays on absolutely everything. 192 kbps is the sensible default for speech and music alike; go to 320 kbps only if the source is already high quality.

WAVUncompressed and lossless. Right when the file goes back into an editor, wrong for sharing — expect roughly 10 MB per minute.

M4AAAC in an MP4 container. Slightly better than MP3 at the same bitrate and the default across Apple devices.

OGGVorbis, a genuinely open format with true variable bitrate. Excellent quality per megabyte, but not every device plays it.

FLACLossless but compressed — about half the size of WAV with identical audio. The right archive format.

Converting from a lossy format to a lossless one cannot restore what was already discarded: an MP3 turned into FLAC is simply a larger file with the same audio. Convert to lossless only when your source is lossless.
